The Taste of the Teign Food Trail is this year illustrated by renowned local artist Laura Wall.
Laura is 31 years old and an award-winning artist based in Teignmouth, Devon. She is most known in the Southwest for her large scale murals and illustrative series, Love At The Seaside. Laura is inspired by the Devon and Cornish coast and paints quirky landscapes based on real places, which are displayed in galleries nationwide; all feature the same characters that she has created including Goose and Sophie from her children’s book series.
In May 2013 Laura won Britain’s Best Up and Coming Artist, a prestigious award, awarded by The Fine Art Trade Guild. Laura has since had sell out exhibitions with galleries around the UK. Most recently, Laura won national Entrepreneur of the Year awarded by the Venus Women Awards for her approach to business.
As well as this a children’s book Laura has written and illustrated Goose Goes to the Zoo came runner up for the People’s Book Prize 2013. This is Laura’s other creation – a character called Goose. A series of four books called Goose were published in 2012, there are now 11 books in the series with more to follow in 2017. They have reached over 40 countries and are translated in over 10 languages. The series has gained a lot of support including from Harper Collins in the USA, who are currently publishing four Goose titles across America and Canada.
Goose has started to turn heads in the world of children’s publishing and licensing, including from highly regarded company, Fluid World, the brand management company behind Mr Men and Hello Kitty. In January 2016 Goose was signed with Fluid World, with the aim to make the series into a household name. Laura works alongside Fluid World creating merchandise designs and developing the vision for Goose. The goal is for soft toys, clothing, and gifts to be merchandised over the coming 12 – 24 months, which will be available in high street stores around the UK. Most recently a license was signed to make Goose into a touring stage show
Bill Oddie has also narrated 6 of the books in the series and these will be released as audio books in conjunction with other merchandise soon. As well as this a deal has been garnered with animation company King Rollo Films to make an animated pilot of Goose, with the aim of a fully animated series to be commissioned.
Laura opened her own gallery and public working studio in May 2015 in Teignmouth, Devon, with husband Dave Butt, this has since become the home for the fine art series Love at the Seaside and all things Goose! And a place where you can meet Laura and watch her paint.
The final illustration will show the location of many of the businesses supporting Taste of the Teign within the geography of the Teign Valley. It will be reproduced on a number of selected souvenir items, hopefully becoming collectors pieces as it is a ‘one-off’ for this years event.
